Toku Shimomura Diary 12

Cloudy and cold. I woke up early in the morning. Around 10 a.m. we received more internees from Seattle. When we greeted the buses the people looked like they were in “tomaru kago” (bamboo cage for transporting criminals) which were used in the old years. When I looked at the wire fences next to the buses my eyes filled with tears and my heart suffered. I prayed that I could believe in the wartime treaty and forget that I was captive and maintain my morale. Today Matsuda’s whole family was interned. They delivered the articles which I asked them to bring for me. Sasaki and Obasawa san also were interned today. I heard that all of these people Were staying in Area D. I will not be able to meet them. Kazuo and Michio supplied me with this news. At night I wrote a letter to Tsuboi san and asked her to bring the articles that I left behind….
