Biography:
Au Ho-Nien's skillful style applies the traditional techniques of "broken ink" and "dry brush" harmonized with the techniques of water and pigment infusion in buildable applications of ink wash. Painting was not something that he studied much when he was young, but his father had many literary and artistic friends and a large collection of paintings and calligraphy. In his early twenties, Au’s name began to be known in art circles, and he exhibited in a show that toured the Southeast Asia region. He achieves effects of dimension and distance by applying ink tones and color washes directly onto the paper and sparing the use of outline. In his painting, Au Ho-Nien strives to capture nature's essential beauty while reflecting his feelings and thoughts. His expertise in calligraphy enabled him to fulfill the philosophy of the Lingnan School: "taking nature as teacher and relying on one's own intelligence".
