USC Illuminated Medieval Manuscripts

An Invited Lecture by Dr. Greg Clark

This lecture given by Dr. Gregory Clark from the University of the South (Sewanee, Tennessee) was the inaugural lecture in a series of lectures and symposia on the History and Prehistory of the Book. This lecture was a collaboration between the Center for the Premodern World (USC Dana and David Dornsife College of letters, Arts and Sciences), Dohney Special Collections Library, and the USC Illuminated Medieval Manuscripts Project. It was given in Special Collections on February 5, 2020, and focused on the two Books of Hours included in this project. Dr. Clark detailed the findings of his thorough investigation into the probable origins and dates of each manuscript.

On this page, you will find a link to the recorded lecture on USC Libraries' YouTube, a transcription of Dr. Jay Rubenstein's introduction; and Dr. Clark generously provided his lecture notes and presentation slides here as well.
