USC Illuminated Medieval Manuscripts

Book of Hours, use of Rome, Northern France and/or Bruges

Description

15th century Illuminated Medieval Manuscript on vellum. This richly decorated manuscript includes ten full-page miniatures framed by decorative borders, seven pages framed by borders in gold and colors and hundreds of smaller initials in gold and glittering colors. The miniatures are based on designs current in Willem Vrelant's (from Flanders) shop in Bruges, ca. 1460-1470. Vrelant was one of the most prolific, influential, and commercially successful illuminators working in Bruges during the third quarter of the 1400s. He illuminated a lavish historical manuscript for Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, in 1468. Our manuscript's production site could have been northern France or Flanders. An additional interesting detail, is the manuscript binding: In French blind-tooled leather over wooden boards, gilt and gauffered edges, signed I.A. Gontier or Goutier on back cover.
