VAPORWAVE is a music and art
movement that represents
the leisurely use of the internet.
Appreciating VAPORWAVE dependson being aware of internetsubcultures that rely on thethan monetary profit.
unrestricted sharing of
content for reasons otherIn this way VAPORWAVE continues
the tradition of remediation
of new media.
VAPORWAVE’s remediation juxtaposes
the new with the old in user
created and user shared
art on sites like Tumblr
and Reddit.
VAPORWAVE represents the
internet’s potential for
randomness thanks to theefficiency of Google, with
its billions of indexed websites
comprising both text and image.VAPORWAVE is also a nostalgic
movement that attempts to recreate
the disappointment of comparing
modern media with media that was considered
cutting edge and state of the art in
the 1980s and 1990s. It is no
coincidence that the vast majority
of VAPORWAVE music samples tracks
from those decades. Indeed, almost all
VAPORWAVE music is produced on a
computer by means of
sampling and messing with
preexisting music or sounds.

VAPORWAVE art tends to be repetitive
and relies on certain elements
that provide the right aesthetic
for the viewer.
Each common topic of VAPORWAVE
art hearkens the viewer back
to the 1980s , 1990s and early 2000s,
when widespread computer
usage and virtual reality
grew in popularity and
Japanese technology
threatened to take over
the Western world.
Palm Trees
Greco-Roman Statues
The use of these statues
and busts either comes
from late 1980s interior
design kitsch (1),
seapunk (2), or else
from the imitation of
Helios from the
Colossus of Rhodes.
This sculpture is
featured onthe
the album cover of
"Floral Shoppe" (2011),
by Macintosh Plus
(also known as Vektroid,
a Portland, Oregon
based producer). (3)
"Floral Shoppe" is
universally considered
to be the most
famous vaporwave
release and to some
fans, it's also
the best.
