More classes and specializations were added to the curriculum and SLI was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. President Stephens retired in 1938 after serving 38 years as president. He was also an ardent photographer and took many photographs of campus and Louisiana life. His photographs are preserved in the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collections and are accessible through the Louisiana Digital Library.
