Tunnels, Pools, and Ghosts: Exploring Space at St. Catherine University

Ghosts

Ghost stories are a part of this popular campus lore. Many members of the St. Kate's community have had some sort of paranormal experience on campus or at least have heard the stories of campus ghosts. Many ghosts stick to themselves and are heard roaming the buildings at night but some students have had paranormal experiences with more interactive ghosts. Mallory Haskin, Art History 08' and MLIS '16, shared her story with a ghost in Whitby Hall.

She worked in the summers between semesters as a summer resident advisor (RA) and conference assistant. This job included hosting conference attendees in Whitby Hall back when it was still a residence hall. In the summer St. Kate's hosts conferences and attendees can stay in the residence hall and as a conference assistant Mallory would assist residents to their rooms. One attendee arrived at three in the morning from her red eye flight. Mallory went to meet her on campus and then helped her to Whitby Hall. They traveled across campus to the fourth floor of Whitby where the guest would be staying for the night. They arrive on the forth floor and Mallory showed her around the floor across. She shows her the bathrooms and her room and as they're walking towards the end of the hallway they both hear a "BAM." They're startled as the only other person on the floor is already asleep. They look towards the noise which came from the janitors closet with a glass window. Through the window they see a hand, on the inside, Mallory says it sounded like someone pounded on the glass. Naturally they both scream and are startled. The guest is scared and says "There's somebody in there." Mallory has to check as the person in charge. She guides the guest to her room and then proceeds to check out the closet. She listens to the closet but doesn't hear anything so proceeds to unlock it with her master key. Inside is nothing more than a wastebasket and a mop. She locks the closet back up. The guest comes back into the hallway and says "there wasn't anyone in there was there?" Mallory says no and the guest says "I saw a hand." Mallory says "I did to."

On campus there are many places where there are eerie feelings and many ghost stories to go along with them. Mallory's story is  unique but not the only one. The ghosts of our past continue to roam the halls and remain on our campus. If only they could share their stories in this project.
