         In 21st century America, college has become the second-largest expense that an individual is likely to make in a lifetime  -- second only to purchasing a home. However, it has not always been this way. Over the last couple of decades, deep cuts in state funding for higher education has substantially contributed to the increase in college tuition.   It's hard for people to realize the gravity of an issue like this when the only thing they see is a statistic with large numbers and percentages. It makes it easier to desensitize yourself from the problem when you are not personally going through it.
