Outside people or non-natives to the community, should take the time to understand the problems before trying to solve them through collaboration with the community.

This approach to community centered design requires all voices to be welcomed, and listened to. In this way, new and more diverse solutions can be arrived at, and local residents are thus empowered to take control of their future. Bennett Peji is Senior Director at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. He directs the local economy initiative, branding, marketing, community affairs and communications work. He is also an international brand consultant, designer and frequent speaker on community-centered design. Peji serves on the boards of California Humanities, the University of San Diego Center for Peace and Commerce, and the La Jolla Playhouse and served as a Commissioner of Arts & Culture for the City of San Diego. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
