Promoting Traditional Gender Roles

In "Big Jim McLain"(1952), the portrayal of masculinity throughout the film is extremely evident. The star John Wayne, is an investigator for the Un-American activities committee. The clear gender roles of the damsel in distress and the strong fearless men are made clear. John Wayne is dressed as the traditional successful man, always in a nice suit and tie. He portrays the middle class man and inspires the men of the day strive to be like him and fight against all communists.

"Kiss Me Deadly"(1955) is a drama that displays the ultimate "mans" man. He is the mysterious hero that always gets the girl. In this movie and others like it, the women characters tend to be helpless and fragile. Any girl that shows intelligence is usually one of immoral characters, and must be a communist. This movie gives the idea to women of the time to follow the lead of the man and to rely on them.
