Promoting American Ideals

Movies influenced more than just the hearts and minds of America, they swayed cultural norms both in America and abroad. The movies during the Cold War era demonstrated how Americans should or should not act, what they should or should not wear, and ultimately who they should or should not be. Promoting American liberal capitalist ideal became a potent weapon against the Communistic threat.

These motion pictures expressed gender roles and told men and women what was acceptable. The days of Rosie the Riveter were over. Women essentially depended on men. Their responsibilities were in the home, while the men dealt with the ominous disarray of the real world.

These films encouraged American unity through these common ideals, creating a common enemy of Communism and the Soviets. Through hard work and the strength of the liberal capitalist system, the Americans could defeat the Communist threat.
