Conclusions

As evidenced, Hollywood played an important role in the battle for hearts and minds during the Cold War. Filmmakers through all genres created films that showed Americans who they should fear, why they should fear, and who they should be as a people. The monitoring of the industry ensured that the Communist threat would be portrayed and that American ideals would be promoted. The Hollywood Ten served as an example of the consequences of opposing the anti-communist political agenda of Hollywood of the 1940s through the 1960s.

The Cold War era of film making revealed just how powerful movies could be as a tool of influence over the American mind and heart. Do movies still hold this power over the American populace? Or have other forms of media and technology taken over in the battle for the American conscience? If so, what ways are Americans being influenced by media today in a context outside of a major war? The study of Cold War film raises these questions and countless others.
