John Culkin at Work

“Everybody is talking about the new media and the kids. And, as usual, after all is said and done, more will have been said than done. This conference is for doers --those who want to develop school programs to help kids analyze the vast visual input in their lives; those who want to create a lively and selective audience for the best within the media; those who want new programming ideas. The child in the age of McLuhan is a new kind of child because of the new media and the presence of the media makes it mandatory that we adjust our educational system to include some analysis of these media.”

-John Culkin, Center for Understanding Media Press Release concerning the 1st National Conference on Films and Television for Children.

The event took place in New York City at the Commodore Hotel on July 6, 7, and 8, 1970.

While neither of the following images are the Commodore Hotel that John Culkin experienced in 1970, these images nonetheless speak to the different ways people experienced and now experience the street, that "place" beyond the classroom that Culkin felt education occurred.
