Ces deux ouvrages sont les témoignages de deux frères britanniques qui ont passé leur enfance à Tianjin. L'ouvrage de Brian Power est d'abord paru en 1984, puis dans une seconde version en 2005. Ce qu'il a écrit, notamment les souvenirs concernant sa mère, ont profondément choqué son petit frère Desmond qui a rédigé à son tour sa propre version de leur enfance. Il a également publié en 2009 une mise au point pour relever et rectifier les erreurs écrites par son frère.
