Formalism
Stevens groups many different theories and theorists together in this chapter. Not all of these people agree with each other. Some clearly build from others, while others do not seem to be in dialogue with anyone else in the chapter. One thing that connects all these different schools of thought, though, is a concern with form: "The range of approaches I'm [Stevens] calling 'Formalist' here are united by an interest in literary form and literary language" (136).
