In January 1973, the U.S. and North Vietnam concluded a final peace agreement, but war between North and South Vietnam continued. However, on May 1, 1975, the Viet Cong took control of Saigon and renamed it Ho Chi Minh City. With the defeat of the U.S., North Vietnam eventually succeeded and unified Vietnam into a single communist country.
