Intertwined & Interdependent: a Microbe and Human History in Space and Time 

Artist Statement:

This sculptural piece is One of Three which depicts the relational space between Corn and Microbes, where both the Corn and the Microbe are considered as active agents in space and time. The common thread that ties the three sculptures together is the flexible web which symbolizes the interconnectedness, partnership and co-dependence between the parties involved. In this case, the web forms a pocket which encompasses the rapport between the Plant root system and the microbial life forms. The specific area that is denoted by the web is symbolic of the infinite spaces where narratives, relationships and histories are created which do not necessarily include the Human. 

The cube sculpture represents the space where Bacteria and Corn unite and collaborate. Both the Bacteria and the Corn engage in a constructive relationship. On the one hand, the microbes protect and help with the subsistence of the corn plant. On the other hand, the Corn provides an oasis for the microbes by giving them energy and vitality. This cube also removes the human from the temporality by showing an alternative space where other agencies have the opportunity to be empowered. 

Placed within the temporal installation, the Bacteria-Corn spacial sculpture completes the Plant-Bacteria-Human triad interrelation, relationship and network. These, anchor the zigzagging and plural Time of the temporal string installation to specific events, spaces and species, rather than being measured by chronological, unilinear ideals.
