Unless the law was repealed by the voters, Oregonians were warned, those who provided goods and amusement on Sundays would face “wholesale arrests.” Moving to prevent such an eventuality, Oregon’s Independent Retailers Association launched a vigorous campaign for repeal-a campaign with strong “ethnic appeal” for both the established Reform Jewish community and newcomers in the immigrant neighborhood of South Portland." - Ellen Eisenberg
