What's a Story Without The Plot?
The plot is the story. Each piece that goes into the making of the plot is vital to the overall quality and understanding of your story. Missing just one of these makes your entire story fall apart. Picture "The Hunger Games" starting with Katniss volunteering for tribute, but we have no background on who the characters are or where the story is taking place. We would be lost, confused, and probably stop reading it all together. All five parts of the plot can be found in every story, movie, and play we read or watch. As you are writing yours, make sure you clearly have each one of these!
Here is an example of how these parts can be found in "The Hunger Games."
- Exposition: We are introduced to Katniss, given the history of Panem, and get background information on the Districts and the Hunger Games.
- Rising Action: The series of conflicts starts with Katniss volunteering to take her sister's platce in the Games. Her hardships continue as she goes to the Captiol, prepares for the games, and is forced to fight for her life in the arena.
- Climax: The climax occurs when Katniss and Peeta are fighting Cato to be the victors of the games.
- Falling Action: This happens when Katniss and Peeta put the poisonous berries in their mouth.
- Resolution: When Katniss and Peeta are allowed to live.
