The House of Love and Prayer: A Radical Jewish Experiment in San Francisco

Global Offshoots of the House of Love and Prayer

Despite the closing of the House of Love and Prayer in 1978, the spirit of the House continues to live on today. Inspired by the vision and teachings of Shlomo Carlebach, those who lived there and/or were inspired by the radical Jewish experiment that it was continue to live a richly fulfilling Jewish life based on the principles, teachings, and music of their spiritual leader. Today there is a massive network of Jewish communities around the world that are direct and indirect offshoots of the House of Love and Prayer.

This map shows a small sampling of the many Jewish communities around the world today that are, in some ways, influenced not only by Shlomo Carlebach, but also the short-lived communal experiences shared at the House of Love and Prayer.

If you know of other communities that belong on this map, please email info@mappingjewishsf.org.
