Why was this ewer made and how was it used?
This ewer was made for the transportation of liquids. Ewers from this time period were used to transport wine for drinking and water for bathing. These objects were common utensils that were often used daily for varying needs. See the image of "Ewer in Chicken Shape" for comparison. This ewer would have been used for the same purpose of Ewer in the form of a Parrot.
In addition to its use for transporting liquids, it serves a decorative purpose as well. Its form in the shape of a parrot is similar to that of the 13th century Reclining Cat from Greater Iran. Both of these objects are in the shape of animals, which makes them visually unique. While these do not serve the same physical purpose, they are aesthetically similar in their form.
