When was this Necklace Made?
The necklace was made between 500s-600s AD in Cyprus, Byzantine Empire. During this time period, the Byzantine Empire was strong in political power and prospered in wealth. It was the first of the three “golden ages” of Byzantine art that was marked with the reign of Emperor Justinian I who initiated numbers of grand architectural projects. Through those architectural projects the artistic and architectural innovation of the Byzantine period was expressed to its full extent. One of such examples is the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople with its giant dome hovering above the church. It was made possible by the ingenious design pendentives that facilitated the whole structure by transferring the weight on the round dome base to the four columns that formed a square area. But beyond that, this period was also marked with cultural diversity and embracement. Despite the dominance of Christianity in the Byzantine Empire, objects with Judeo-Christian figures were still well received and monasticism, a relatively independent branch of Christian, was also included in the architectural projects of Emperor Justinian I.
