The Republic of Venice existed in parts of present day Italy. The most prosperous city, the city of Venice flourished and dominated trade on the Mediterranean sea. Trade along the Mediterranean included trade from not only Europe and North Africa, but also Arabia and parts of Asia. The exact location of where this painting was produced is unknown. Beyond the city of Venice the republic controlled significant land on the mainland known as the terraferma. The republic also controlled some small islands off the coast of Croatia. Smaller cities in these territories contributed painters to the Venetian school which suggests The Last Judgment could have been completed anywhere throughout the republic although it is most likely tied to Venice.
