The Book As

The book itself as performance

The first way to explore the complex relationship between books and performance is to consider the performative qualities of the book itself, unfettered by artistic intervention. Jerome McGann articulates this in his Radiant Textualitywhere he extends the idea of every production of a score or play having a unique meaning to include different editions of the same text. This idea is represented well by the William Blake archive, which allows the user to compare side-by-side different versions of the same page of the same book. The diversity of these editions are striking, and certainly call into question the degree to which we can depend on books to present the truest possible representation of the author's original vision. We are also forced to consider the effect more subtle inconsistencies between editions - page breaks, margins, footnotes, typeface, et cetera - have on our interpretation of the text.

Any discussion of per goes hand-in-hand with its inverse, deformance.
