The Book As

Space + Time

Versatility and adaptability of recto/verso can be displayed through other means, too.

In this section, we will look at the form of the artist’s book Space + Time by Ken Leslie. This book is unlike any of the others examined thus far. It does not take the codex form. It is instead a unique accordion-folded double-sided ring.

Is there still recto/verso when the book form is altered?

One notable aspect of recto/verso is its duality. This book displays this quality twofold:
For one, the book can still be flipped through with a likeness to individual recto/verso pages while folded. Secondly, when unfolded to the circular form, Space + Time is a double sided story. The double sidedness recalls the basis of recto/verso as front/back.

In these manners, Space + Time incorporates the familiar experience of reading while simultaneously invoking a new adaptation of the study of recto/verso.
