Erasmus' Egg: Humanism, Reformation, and the People's Book

Introduction

Introduction

“Erasmus laid the egg that Luther hatched.”

So remarked a contemporary, attributing the success of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation to the former work of Desiderius Erasmus, the world-renowned humanist. Could one have occurred without the other? Perhaps, perhaps not. However, it can be said with certainty that both men, and their associated movements, contributed to the Bible's transformation into the people's book in early modern Western society.

This exhibit, curated to celebrate the 2016 Wheaton Theology Conference, will explore that transformation while highlighting some of items owned by and on loan to the Special Collections of Buswell Library at Wheaton College.
