Chapter 01

A loud ringing noise fractures her eardrum as she quickly comes into consciousness. Her eyes squint, her pupils dilate, and her ears pound as she adjusts to the bright light and piercing noise. It must be morning. She gets out of bed, heading for the bathroom. Two steps, swipe. She slides her wrists across the censor, clocking in for her morning bathroom use. The aching sensation is worse today. Her body feels heavy and restrained with every movement. The apartment she lives in has enough space for a bed, a small lavatory, and a microwave. Not many apartments are bigger than this in Dystopia Inc., especially ones occupied by programmers. They are housed in small quarters by the corporation since they spend most of their day at the corporate facility where they work.

Although living conditions suck, the job pays well, very well. A programmer’s yearly pension usually falls around 400 bitcoins, while the average employee of the corporation only makes around 130 bitcoins a year. Programmers use this money to buy corporate goods. They receive top quality products, spending lavishly while living “modestly.” Those kinks in your neck from sleeping on a rock for a bed can be worked out with an expensive massage they tell you. So don’t worry, it’s all worth it. Because the corporation loves its programmers...if they abide by the rules, of course. Every programmer knows the slogan, they see it on bathroom stalls, doors, and walls: “Follow the rules and live comfortably, break the rules and suffer the consequences. - Love, Your Corporation.”

She finishes showering, brushing her teeth, and all the other delicacies associated with bathroom use. As she swipes her wrist over the censor once more, a time appears above: 10 minutes. Always. She never wastes time. She can’t waste it. Time is precious. Time is money. Opening her dresser, she grabs her work uniform, which consists of a short black skirt and a skin tight white blouse. Sex sells for the corporation. And when something sells, a profit is usually made. Before leaving the apartment, she looks in the mirror, pauses....then, three steps, swipe. She exits the apartment, heading for another ordinary day at work.
