Last semester, many students and faculty described what can only be called an erosion of trust. Cheating on assignments and tests occurred in many schools as stress and workloads grew. The BRAVING framework from Brené Brown outlines how to courageously build trust in the classroom, which has become even more imperative in an uncertain and unpredictable moment. The seven elements of trust, outlined in her framework, are another way to think about building community and responsibility for learning in the classroom. One idea is to host a discussion with students to ask them what each element looks and feels like to them. Setting boundaries, holding each other accountable, and creating a culture of non-judgement will help build up trust, engage students from a place of courage, and foster a space of mutual respect and accountability.
