The June L. Mazer Subject Files

Introduction

The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archive's Subject Files are an extensive collection of clippings, flyers, photographs, pamphlets, pieces of writing, letters, zines, comics, and more related to lesbian and queer history. Bunny Mac Culloch (June Mazer's partner) ran the Mazer after it was moved from Oakland into their home in Altadena, California. June Mazer died of cancer shortly after that move. Bunny took over the role collecting materials representative of lesbian life. She was an active part of curating and arranging the materials according to topic, organization, or person. The original system was set up in Oakland by founders in 1981 when the archive was known as the West Coast Lesbian Collections. Bunny was dedicated to the Mazer. We have an audio recording where a breathless Bunny talks about how she would like things organized in the future. She recorded this the night before she died in 1989.

"Bunny was willing to go to any lesbian’s home and clear out their closet (literally) in order to keep from losing lesbian history. She advertised this service to lesbians all over Southern California in the 80’s on IMRU Radio, the long time Gay & Lesbian Radio station on KPFK."

Recently, the Mazer received a grant to digitize the Subject Files in conjunction with UCLA's Digital Library. This exhibit will highlight many from the vast number of topics in our Subject Files, and hopefully it will encourage you to come in and explore further!
