STEM & Citizen Science

Welcome to USC's Science & Engineering Library's online display, STEM & Citizen Science. April is Citizen Science Month and Science & Engineering Librarians, Cari Kaurloto and Alvaro Quezada, wanted to highlight the importance of citizen science to STEM. This display features how citizen science projects contribute to the fields of biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering and computer science, environmental science, mathematics, and physics and astronomy. This is by no means comprehensive of all the ways citizen science support STEM. This should instead be viewed as an introduction to citizen science and illustrate how meaningful it can be to participate in projects.

Our goal is to offer insight into specific projects and how citizen science is positioned to help advance scientific discovery. We are not endorsing specific projects, but rather illuminating potential successful stories to inspire. To provide a more holistic picture of citizen science, we not only include these success stories, but also reveal the challenges such as variant data quality or managing volunteers with little or no scientific background. We hope that this introduces those new to citizen science to its merits, while also providing those more experienced with ideas and new information.

We welcome further suggestions and hope you enjoy this display.

Thank you,
Cari Kaurloto ( and Alvaro Quezada (
