Dictionaries

While learning the Spanish language, it's important to have access to a variety of useful and reliable dictionaries.

It's important to understand that Google Translate, while a useful general reference tool, does not always give accurate translations; in fact, they often produce grammar errors and provide incorrect vocabulary translations. For this reason, their website is not listed and is not recommended.

SpanishDict
www.spanishdict.com
This dictionary provides basic definitions as well as loose translations of text posts.
The page also provides full conjugations of verbs, reference flashcards, and mini grammar lessons.

WordReference
www.wordreference.com
This dictionary provides more complex definitions, often with multiple example sentences for reference.
The page also has a feature where you can look at synonyms for words in Spanish and in English.

Real Academia EspaƱola
www.rae.es
This dictionary gives definitions in Spanish, much like how an English dictionary gives definitions in English.
The page gives a number of accurate definitions.

Linguee
www.linguee.com
Linguee is a page that allows you type in a word or phrase and see how it has been translated in real-life instances.
The page should be used to help you understand how a colloquial phrase can be translated to Spanish or how to use a word in context.
