[Sp23] Community Innovation - IS/MACS266: University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Assignment 2: Alice Campbell Hall & Reading Response

Part 1: Reading Response
Read and review the assigned readings on DRES. Using the Reagan and Brown readings, list at least three different strategies that Nugent and the DRES Community used to disrupt the dominant image of "disability" and overcome barriers in order to institute DRES. Refer to the Expanding Horizons visual history text of DRES: how does it refer to barriers  -- social, material, cultural and/or political -- that needed to be overcome for DRES to be realized? Find and explain an example from Expanding Horizons. Using one citation from the readings, consider whether that author would argue today that these innovations have enabled DRES students to become visible on their own terms? (All reading responses should be approximately 500 words)

Part 2: Alice Campbell Hall:
1. Take another 30 minutes focusing on your selected booth. Take note of what stands out to you in your own booth. How does it represent the values of "landgrant"? What stories, designs and features draw your attention? And why? Take a note pad and camera (a phone camera is fine), and document at least 2 objects/features of your booth that speak to you.

2. In roughly 500 words, describe and summarize what you observed in your booth, the stories that stand out to you, and how/if they represent the values of the University of Illinois and "landgrant". Start by reflecting on your original impression of your booth's features, and what was new to you. Take note of what stories or objects in your booth drew your attention and why. Consider what someone who's never visited the campus or your college before might think if they saw the booth. Feel free to make connections to current events or other resources if relevant.

3. Make sure to upload your assignment (photos and text) to your Scalar page. We'll take some time to share these in class on Tuesday.

Post your Reading Response and Lab Report to your Scalar page and send us (macs265teachingteam@gmail.com) the link by 12pm (noon) Monday, September 4.
