Week 5: What is Neoliberalism? A Collaborative Annotation Activity (10/10)

This is a whole-class collaborative annotation activity aimed at helping you to understand the predominant ideology driving social policy in the US and elsewhere, and to help you recognize and critique the ideological underpinnings of much of our current policy debates and social arrangements.

You may work with your team or on your own with this activity. In this type of activity you not only post your own annotations but comment on the annotations of others.

You will be annotating this article from The Guardian, Neoliberalism - The Ideology at the Root of Our Problems, but first everyone should read/watch the pieces on neoliberalism that I have posted in Readings, Watchings, Listenings: Neoliberalism as a Water Ballon, Three Minute Theory,: What is Neoliberalism?, A Short History of Neoliberalism, What is Neoliberalism?, Paradoxes of Neoliberalism, and Noam Chomsky on Neoliberalism.

Everyone should aim for at least four individual "thick" annotations. As with David Silver's Blog post on The Difference Between Thin and Thick Tweets, the same criteria can be applied to annotations. To paraphrase Silver, convey "two or more layers of information" and compose an annotation that is so compelling that no one in their right mind can avoid reading it. Tag your annotations with at least 4 tags. When appropriate, use tags that relate to phrases and words used in the article, e.g., #regulation, #meritocracy, #wealth, #inequality, #the poor, #competition, #globalization. And don't forget to post to swpp1nyu not Public.

In addition to your own annotations, read the annotations of your colleges and comment on at least six of them. Thick comments are the best!
