Simpsons and Freudian Dream Theory

Physical Stimuli

Physical stimuli is a fairly maximally descriptive Freudian term.  It's either external or internal physical sensations which are then incorporated into one's dream.  If a person is hungry, he may dream of eating as a form of wish-fulfillment.  Freud also believes that dreams function in order to keep a person asleep, so a dream might explain away a loud noise or an unpleasant sensation, preventing a person from waking up.
This was the primary explanation of dreams before Freud's interpretation, and much of Freud's writing was aimed at convincing his readers that dreams had a function and logic beyond simple somatic reactions.  So, it's interesting that The Simpsons uses so little of this concept when compared with other Freudian terms.
