Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack!『ゴジラ・モスラ・キングギドラ 大怪獣総攻撃』

Due to the popularity of Godzilla (1954), the titular monster became the focal point of a franchise that is still being produced today. To date, there are thirty-one films in the franchise, including several American remakes. While most films are stand-alone stories with no connection to previous films in the franchise, Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (hereafter All-Out Attack) is unique in that it is a spiritual sequel to the seminal 1954 film.

Directed by Shusuke Kaneko and released in 2001, the film follows schlock TV reporter Yuri Tachibana as she reports on the return of Godzilla to Japan. As noted, this is a spiritual sequel to the original film, therefore in the continuity of the movie, no one has seen or heard of Godzilla since his first attack on Tokyo in 1954. Due to the passing of time, people have forgotten about Godzilla; he has passed into myth. Therefore, when multiple giant monsters start moving about Japan, all of them are reported as Godzilla. However, the giant lizard himself makes an appearance in Tokyo and begins a rampage that can only be ended by the joint efforts of the industrious Japanese and the three Guardian Monsters of Japan:  Baragon, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.

As the climactic battle comes to a head, Yuri struggles to document and broadcast the truth of Godzilla to the people of Japan while at the same time her father, Admiral Taizo Tachibana, a survivor of the original Godzilla attack, moves to intercept the beast and destroy him once and for all.

Fun Facts:  The monster Baragon is not listed in the title due to his lack of popularity among the fandom.

Furthermore, the producers wanted original Godzilla enemies, Anguirus and Varan, to be two of the Guardian Monsters, but were not considered bankable hits, so were later changed to the much more popular characters of Mothra and King Ghidorah.

Additionally, this is the only film where the three-headed golden dragon King Ghidorah appears as a non-villain. He has been portrayed as Godzilla's evil rival in all other appearances.

All-Out Attack can be purchased at retailers such as Amazon.com.
