Writers throughout history and across the world have created works that foreground the visual nature of text. The 20th century saw an enormous burst of activity in the field of visual poetry. Poets, writers, and artists experimented with new writing technologies—such as typewriters, copy machines, and computers—to develop innovative ways to visually represent language on the page. These works utilize a wide range of tactics and techniques, and achieve a remarkable diversity of effects. This book will highlight just a few examples from this significant body of materials.
