The Harry Ransom Center

The Harry Ransom Center (HRC) is a cultural heritage institution at the University of Texas at Austin, with a wide array of collections, programming and initiatives. It is a museum-archive-library hybrid that houses over 1 million books, 42 million manuscripts, 5 million photographs, and 100,000 works of art. The mission of the HRC is to "encourage discovery, inspire creativity, and advance understanding of the humanities for a broad and diverse audience to the preservation and sharing of its extraordinary collections."

The HRC was founded in the mid twentieth-century as a humanities research center. Since then, it has expanded to include a first-floor rotating gallery, a second-floor reading room for visitors to examine HRC collection materials, and multiple floors of collection materials. The HRC offers public programming, including hosting discussions relevant to collection materials, course instruction for UT instructors, and releases a magazine.
