Reindeer Husbandry as Sami identity

As the state considered the "ideal Sami" to be a nomadic reindeer herder (Lantto 2014), this definition of Sami identity heavily excluded women. Reindeer husbandry is a predominantly male practice in Sami culture. Therefore, women were those most likely to be excluded by the state definitions of Sami identity (Lantto & Mörkenstam 2008).
