About the Samahang Pilipino Archive

Samahang Pilipino is a multifaceted student organization which addresses the specific needs of Pilipinos at UCLA. Founded in 1972, Samahang Pilipino's membership has grown to over two hundred active members. Active on campus and in the community, this organization provides cultural programing, social events, educational forums, academic support, and represents the special concerns for greater commitment to our community and developing leadership skills.
The archive is divided into 5 sections: Academic, Community, Cultural, Political, and Social. These 5 categories represent Samahang's pillars and serve as the foundation for sustaining a thriving student organization. Documentation that is presented reflects one or more of these categories.

Through student research and archival documentation you will learn all there is to known about this organization's endeavors: Samahang Pilipino members have led movements to maintain Pilipinos in affirmative action programs and have struggled to ensure that classes in Pilipino American history are taught at UCLA; through the Pilipino Recruitment and Enrichment Program, and more recently through Samahang Pilipino Advancing Community Empowerment, members have helped junior and senior high school students in the community by providing academic tutoring and personal support; Sayaw Ng Silangan—our performing dance troupe—along with our annual Pilipino Cultural Night production allow students to learn indigenous cultural folk dances, music and songs to promote traditional culture and art. And there's so much more!

Accessibility and understanding of these materials is the primary goal of this digital archive. The archival material showcased comes directly from the UCLA’s Special Collections Library. The archive's defining characteristics include: enabling students to actively research Samahang's lengthy history; to prompt further commentary on how the organization has brought about change through its service for the community; and to open discussion between alumni and current student members.

The creation of this website is on-going as new material is being processed and allocated to special collections. It was created in the 2017 - 2018 academic school year by then Ourstorian David Castro, and continues to be run today by a group of volunteers.  If you have material to donate contact AJ Tongson (The Ourstorian) at spucla.ourstorian@gmail.com or message him at (310)800-1592
