"A Medium in Which I Seek Relief": Manuscripts of American Sailors 1919-1940

Scholarly Context

This project was inspired first and foremost by Hester Blum's The View from the Masthead: Maritime Imagination and Antebellum American Sea Narratives. Related scholarship includes Mark Kelley's work on "Sentimental Seamen" and Paul Gijle's To Swear like a Sailor: Maritime Culture in America, 1750–1850 (2016). The project was also informed by the maritime memoirs, fiction, travel writing, and associated scholarship I encountered in my MNST classes, including:See Works Cited in Text for a more complete list of references.
