"A Medium in Which I Seek Relief": Manuscripts of American Sailors 1919-1940

Hazing

Hazing of first year cadets is a theme in most of the memoirs/journals in the SUNY Maritime Archives, and is wonderfully dramatized in the fifth chapter of Joseph Williams's Four Years Before the Mast: A History of New York's Maritime College. In this chapter Williams draws upon the diaries and memoirs of Maritime graduates Felix Riesenberg, Frederick McMurray, Nick Carter, and Louis Weickum to create a fictionalized account of a first year student on the St. Mary's, the school's first training ship.
