The End
The End is a huge, wall sized mural by street artist Blu that is displayed in his home city of Bologna, Italy. The piece is painted on the outside of the XM24 building and displays a huge and complicated mess of two sides clashing. The “red” side features Sauron dressed in a business suit and adorned with an Italian flag sash as their leader and the “blue” side features a heavily tattooed man wearing a sweatshirt labeled “XM24” reaching for “The One Ring” from the Lord of the Rings, however the inside of the ring is inscribed with the words "Fucking Hell".
This piece was something Blu painted specifically for the XM24 organization, and the mural is jammed packed with references to pop culture, politics, XM24, Bologna, and some personal ones as Blu suggests in his blog entry on this piece. The End is a piece that is hard to digest on account of it being incredibly chaotic, but its message is clear once one looks closer. In the context of Bologna, Blu’s values, and the history of the XM24 building The End is a piece with a lot of layers to it, both visually and contextually. To fully understand what The End conveys a significant dose of context is needed, making the piece VERY location specific. (High Res Image)
