Ruth Elder Remembered

A Female Flier

"Most of us need to escape every so often from our complicated civilization. There is no greater escape than aviation; flying is something spiritual as well as practical. The air above the earth is a new and very wonderful world, and in it woman has found a secure place." -New York Times

With pioneers like Elder and Earhart, women aviators were showing up on the map. Thanks to the tireless efforts of these women, they were able to create the Women's National Air Derby Race and bring all those women together. In sifting through the research on this event, it is plain that there wasn't any competitive, mean-spirited women in the race: rather, this event was a thrilling opportunity for them all to meet and share their passion. The Derby helped to prove to America that women could fly unaccompanied by a man successfully. After the race, some of the women founded The Ninety-Nines, an all-women aviator club that is still running strong today. Nearly all the women in the race were charter members, if not elected officials.
