Relationships and Decisions

Orange Sweatshirt Intro

"Orange Sweatshirt" is a short poem by David Devanny, that was submitted to and consequently won first prize in the New Media Writing Prize in the Student Prize section. The poem is interactive, in that one can control its aspects, such as turning up or down its eroticism, changing the layout using line breaks, or even getting rid of words that the reader doesn't feel should be in the poem. Devanny programmed the poem's code himself. "Orange Sweatshirt" is a sort of ode to the persona's love interest. For this piece of writing, the poem is being interpreted as being read from the persona's point of view. This book aims to discuss whether our actions in real life differ from stories, and whether the relationships we see in electronic literature can affect our relationships in real life. A juxtaposition of a hypothetical real life situation of someone writing a poem for their love interest against "Orange Sweatshirt" can show us the differences and similarities between this idealistic situation and reality, and how much we can learn about relationships based on a fantasy one.
