Reflecting Medieval Manuscripts: RTI at Spencer Research Library

Digital Imaging terms

D
Digitization:

Digitization in a library, museum, or archive involves photographing artifacts within a collection. The digital images provide a record of the object that is helpful to conservators and researchers.

L
Light spectrum:
The different wavelengths of energy produced by light.

M

Multi-Spectral Imaging (MSI):
A series of photographs under different wavelengths of light, both visible and invisible (ultraviolet and infrared.)

R

(Highlight) Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI):
RTI images are created from multiple photographs of a subject shot from a stationary camera position. In each photograph, light is projected from measured points and reflected back with a black sphere. There are two types of RTI, dome RTI and highlight RTI.

U

Ultraviolet-fluorescence:
When exposed to ultraviolet radiation, some pigments become fluorescent, giving off visible light.

Ultraviolet (UV) light:
Ultraviolet is a form of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, making it invisible to the human eye.
