40 ft Schaeberle Camera

John M. Schaeberle designed a 40ft portable camera that was used in different configurations for the majority of these expeditions. In each locality the terrain, the available materials, and the skills of the laborers produced a different configuration of the telescope.

To defray costs and provide site specific knowledge, the Lick relied on local labor in each location to assist with the setup and manipulation of the camera and photographic equipment. The collaborators at each site ranged from British naval officers in Chile to Dutch colonial officials in Indonesia (then Sumatra) to plantation workers on Flint Island.
