Michel Eyquem de Montaigne

"The thing of it is, we must live with the living." – Montaigne

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) was a French statesman and writer, best known for his Essais, a series of 107 explorations in writing that are generally considered to be the precursor to and influence for the modern literary essay. The English word "essay" itself comes from Montaigne's word for this kind of writing, essai, derived from the French essayer, which means "to try" or "to attempt." Montaigne's Essais and the genre of the literary essay are both strongly connected to the rise of print culture.
