1c. Creole People During the 18th Century

Eighteenth century Louisiana creole culture, “is the most significant source of Africanization of the entire culture of the United States” (157). The word “creole” takes on many meanings throughout the years and even today, however, during the “eighteenth-century Louisiana, the term creole…was used to distinguish American-born slaves from African-born slaves” (157). As such, it is because of the introduction of African slaves to Louisiana, that the colony finally began to expand. “Before the founding of New Orleans in 1718, French Louisiana was no more than a weak military outpost” (157).
