Alice Bag
How did I come to unleash the wrath of Kali upon the world of punk?... the seeds of Violence Girl were sown way before I was even born.- Violence Girl, 8
Both of Alice Bag's (nee Alicia Armendariz) parents were born in Mexico, although her mother's family moved to Los Angeles when she was a child and her father grew up in Mexico. Alice's mother, Candelaria, strived to assimilate into mainstream American culture and considered herself Mexican-American, while her father, Manuel, rejected assimilation and never considered himself American. Alice, her parents, and her older sister, Yolanda, lived on Ditman Avenue, a street in a barrio of East LA. Manuel frequently beat Candelaria, creating a toxic and dangerous home that prompted Yolanda to move out with her soon-to-be husband at an early age. Summers provided an escape for Candelaria and her daughters, as they visited family in Juarez, Mexico. Manuel forbid his family from speaking English at home, so Alice entered elementary school only able to speak Spanish.
