The Get Down
- Show runtime: 2 seasons, 2016-current
- Shown on: Netflix
- Creators: Stephen Adly Guirgis, Baz Luhrmann
- Main queer characters: Dizzee Kipling (Jaden Smith) and Thor (Noah Le Gros)
- Sexualities: Jaden Smith has proven to be gender and sexually fluid in the past. All other creators are straight.
- Show Description: (from IMDB) A ragtag group of teenagers run wild in the streets of the Bronx in the late 1970's.
- Queer Summary: Dizzee and Thor, two aspiring graffiti artists, meet while doing art in subway tunnels and bond over their art. Later, Thor takes Dizzee to a drag club, where a woman speaks to Dizzee about gender identity. Dizzee and Thor dance and share a near-kiss. In the following season, Dizzee faces his new found sexuality more head-on, and he and Thor discuss their feelings and relationship further.
- Creator Comments: Creators have not throughly commented on any queer storylines within the series. However, writers have shut down the possibility of making others characters (like Zeke and Shaolin) queer.
- Analysis: The show does not only feature a discussion of queerness and gender identity in a show set in the 1970's, but also focuses mainly on the lives of black and Latinx characters. Further, creators have confirmed that Dizzee (a black boy) is bisexual, and his sexuality has been revealed and discussed in the show. He is also in an interracial relationship, since his love interest, Thor, is white. However, there has been criticism over the fact that Dizzee and Thor did not get to kiss in the first season, and that creators have shut down the possibility of other queer characters in the series.
